Eyelid Reshaping (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid Reshaping surgery (Blepharoplasty) is an operation which tightens the skin and soft tissues an operation to tighten the skin and soft tissues of your eyelids. Ageing causes your skin to lose its elasticity, and the subsequent appearance of excess skin and soft tissues can give you a tired, puffy-faced look.

Why you might need it

Eyelid Reshaping is a very common cosmetic procedure to remove the skin and fat from around your eyelids that has drooped as you aged. Sometimes genetics can affect the increased development of ‘aged’ looking eyelids or eye bags.

You may also experience impaired vision due to the excess skin, and surgery may help to improve it.

For a lot of people, the surgery helps restore their confidence in their appearance, and reflect how dynamic and zestful they feel on the inside.

Your Consultation

You will have a consultation with a specialist cosmetic consultant, during which you can discuss the issue with your eye, the look you would ideally like to achieve and any questions that you may have.

You can also talk to your consultant about brow lifts or anti-wrinkle injections to tackle crow’s feet and help improve the appearance of other areas around your eyes if you wish. We also recommend talking to the surgeon about their past experience and asking to see previous before and after photos, to make sure you feel entirely comfortable with your decision.

Your consultant will discuss the procedure with you so you know exactly what to expect. Your consultant may also discuss if any further diagnostic tests may be needed, such as a blood test or scan, with you.

The Procedure

Eyelid Reshaping (Blepharoplasty) can be done under a local anaesthetic which is injected into the eyelids or performed under general anaesthetic.

The operation usually takes up to 1.5 hours. The length of time will depend on whether you are having one eyelid or both, done.

Your surgeon will make cuts into the natural lines and creases in the lid and into the laughter lines at the corner of your eye, therefore any scars will be in the eye’s natural folds, and hiding them as much as possible.

They will then reposition or remove any excess fat and the loose muscle and skin. Finally, your surgeon closes the wound with very fine sutures and tiny sterile bandages.

Recovery/Aftercare

Following the procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room to recuperate until you are ready to go home, once you are fully recovered from the anaesthesia.

You will be given pain relief and you will need someone to drive you home, and it will be helpful to have a family member or friend stay with you for the first 24 hours, to help you around the house. You will experience some pain initially after the procedure, and some swelling or bruising around the area, which will settle naturally.

You will need to avoid getting your eyelids wet and any strenuous activity for the first week as well as avoiding wearing eye make-up. It is also advised that you rest and sleep upright for 3 – 5 days following your surgery, and avoid bending down.

Your consultant will advise you on when you can return to work and leisure activities.
